At Phoenix every day begins with students reading a significant fictional text. Current options range from The Woman in Black, to Lord of the Flies to The Book Thief. The sessions give students a structured opportunity to read aloud, explore and discuss a book that they might not normally encounter.
This is a proven way both to increase students’ ability to read challenging text, something that will support their progress in all of their lessons, but also expose them to a range of contexts and concepts that will increase their knowledge of the wider world.
Those students who come to Phoenix and find reading difficult are given an intensive programme of support to improve their reading and allow them to access the level of text required to succeed in an academic curriculum.
Since the start of the year these students have made an average of 22 months progress in their reading ages, with one student’s hard work and perseverance leading to an improvement in their reading age of 4 ½ years!
