How to Apply
Year 7 Entry
Leaving primary school and moving on to the much bigger world of secondary education might feel worrying and stressful. Our aim is to make all our new students feel welcome and safe so that they can get off to a good start in Year 7. We provide an excellent transition programme for new students: this programme allows children and parents to participate in a number of events before the child starts school in September, and is designed to help support them throughout their journey into secondary school. If your child is joining us from primary school, they will have the opportunity to visit the school during a series of taster events. On these days, students will experience life at secondary school, will take part in lessons and various co-curricular activities, will have the opportunity to experiment with the academy’s wide range of facilities and different equipment, and will familiarise themselves with the timings of the day. We also host a Welcome Event for parents and students in July: this is a chance to hear more about Phoenix Academy’s enrichment opportunities, to meet staff and form tutors, and to ask any questions that you may have.
Phoenix Academy is a non-selective academy, with an agreed admissions number of 150 students per academic year. If the school is oversubscribed, applications are considered against the criteria set out below. After the admission of students with Statements of Special Educational Needs where Phoenix Academy is named on the Statement, the selection criteria will be applied in this order:
- Admission of children in Public Care (Looked after Children and previously Looked after Children).*
- Admission of children with specific medical needs, social needs and special needs where the application is supported by specific written advice as to why admission to the Academy is necessary.
- Admission of children with siblings currently attending the Academy and who will continue to do so on the date of admission. The term "sibling" means a full, step, half, adopted or foster brother or sister, but not cousins. The Academy reserves the right to ask for proof of relationship once offers have been made.
- Nearest walking distance to the school – children who live the nearest distance from the school. The distance which determines how close the child lives to the school is the shortest walking distance along public highways and footpaths between the front door to the child’s permanent address and the main entrance to the school’s main building. The child’s permanent address is where he or she normally lives and sleeps and goes to school from. Proof of residence can be requested once offers have been made.
- Tie-breaker: Where two children live an equal distance from the school a random allocation will be used as a tie-break. Criterion ‘D’ will be used as a tie-break if necessary in categories ‘B’ and ‘C’ above.
If your child was born between 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009, he or she will be starting Year 7 in secondary school from September 2020. Applications open on the 1st of September 2019 for entry to Year 7 in September 2020. On-time applications close on the 31st October 2019 (late on-time applications: 11th December 2019) and you will be notified of the outcome of your application on 2nd March 2020. If your application is not successful, you can put your child’s name on the waiting list managed by Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

Entry Points – In-Year Admissions
Parents or guardians who would like to apply for a place at Phoenix Academy at any time other than Year 7 will need to apply using the Hammersmith and Fulham Council’s in-year online-application form. You can find the In-Year Application Form, via the following link:
Once an application has been received by the Hammersmith and Fulham Council’s Admissions Team, the council will make a decision as to whether a place can be offered. If a school has more vacancies than applications, your child will be offered a place. If the school has more applications than places available, admission rules are used to decide the order that applicants are offered places. If we are unable to offer a place, the child’s name will be placed on a waiting list in accordance with the published admissions criteria.

If it has not been possible to offer your child a place at Phoenix Academy, you have the right, by law, to appeal to an independent appeal panel. Please consider that, although the law allows you to have the opportunity to appeal against admission decisions, it does not give your child the automatic right to a place at a particular school. There is no guarantee that your appeal will be successful and each case will be decided on its own merits by the independently appointed panel.
